THE TESTS OF AUTHORITY: pt. 2
Text: Matthew 22:23-33
THE ISSUE OF RESURRECTION TESTED CHRIST’S THEOLOGY FROM A STANDPOINT OF INTELLECT: vv. 23-33.
THE ANTAGONISTS: Sadducees.
Their influence: Of all the Jewish sects, the Sadducees, though the smallest, were also the most wealthy and influential.
Their politics: Politically, the Sadducees were pro-Roman and accordingly received many favors.
Their theology: they denied the resurrection.
THE APPROACH: they asked what they believed to be the unanswerable question.
The appeal to Moses: v. 24.
The issue of Levirate marriage: vv. 25-27 cf. Deut. 25:5-6.
The question posed by the Sadducees: v. 28.
THE ANSWER: vv. 29-33.
Jesus again forces the real issue into the open: 29.
Jesus then deals with both issues but in reverse order.
The issue of their ignorance of God’s power: 30.
The issue of their ignorance of God’s Word: vv. 31-32 cf. Ex. 3:6. It would be ridiculous for God to state as a truth to Moses that He is the God of men who no longer exist.
- Unfailing devotion to His Deity: Jesus is God and by answering the so-called unanswerable He proved His omniscience.
- Unswerving commitment to His Word: Jesus answered absurdities with Scripture and proved that commitment to God’s Word is infinitely important to God.
- Unbounded confidence in the reality and the glory of the resurrection for those who belong to Him.
